In many ways, Ford’s Raptor line of off-road speedsters is like an actual herd of raptors: you hear them before you see them, they move at astounding speeds... and good luck if one catches up to you. Now, the F-150 Raptor and Bronco Raptor officially welcome the 2024 Ranger Raptor to their Jurassic family.
Though this is the Ranger Raptor’s American debut, the first-gen edition went on sale overseas back in 2018. That model never reached our shores, but the second generation was designed with a U.S. release in mind – and it shows. Let’s explore what to expect from Ford’s newest midsize pickup.
Joining the Pack
While the Ranger Raptor had a long journey finding its way to America, the Raptor name has been firmly established thanks to two generations of the Ford F-150 and Bronco. When you think “Raptor,” you think off-road trucks that do two things emphatically: go fast and go hard.
This Raptor moves just as quickly as its F-150 brethren, a feat in itself. But the lean midsizer also may prove more agile and less cumbersome, particularly on narrower off-road trails. Think of it as the actual raptor equivalent to the F-150's T-Rex: you’re not going to slow down either, but the smaller creature is clearly more maneuverable.
An Off-Road Creature
The same 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 that powers the Bronco Raptor drives the Ranger edition. The Ranger Raptor makes 405 horsepower – technically down from the Bronco Raptor’s 430, though the Ranger Raptor is a considerably lighter vehicle.
This Raptor runs best in its natural habitat: a rugged two-track. Unleashed upon off-road terrain, the Ranger Raptor’s Fox Live Valve shocks get their chance to shine. Get a touch of speed going down trail, and the dampers actively adjust to absorb environmental blows. This is a vehicle that puts the "velocity" in "velociraptor."
