It's not at all uncommon to hear the term “sports car” and have a Ford Mustang spring to mind. In fact, the Ford Mustang has established itself as one of the most widely loved sports cars over the years, closing out its sixth generation of Mustangs with the 2023 model year.
With its iconic appearance and undeniable power and performance capabilities, the Mustang continues to impress with each iteration, and the 2023 version is no exception. Today, we'll take a closer look at the 2023 Ford Mustang, including its exterior and interior design, its engine specs, and its safety features.
Exterior Design and Trim Levels

Not much has changed with the newest addition to the sixth generation of Mustangs. In fact, 2023’s model marks the final iteration of the S550 Mustang, with a redesigned version arriving in 2024 to mark the beginning of the Mustang's seventh generation. In the meantime, a couple of colors have left the palette — Cyber Orange Metallic Tri-Coat and Brittany Blue Metallic — and the Shelby GT500 variant has been discontinued. Otherwise, the 2023 Mustang is available in five different trim levels: EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, Mustang GT, Mustang GT Premium, and Mustang Mach 1.
Design-wise, the 2023 Mustang maintains its instantly recognizable aeronautical-inspired look. It also offers plenty of exterior customization options, including the Wheel and Stripe package, the Mustang Nite Pony package, and the California Special package. You can also choose a convertible top if you so desire, as well as your choice of one of 18 different wheel designs. At its most basic trim level, the 2023 Mustang features dual bright exhausts with rolled tips, manual-folding body-color mirrors, LED headlamps, an Easy Fuel capless fuel filler, and hood vents.
Engine and Performance
The 2023 Mustang comes with your choice of three different engines. The first option is a turbocharged 2.3-liter I4 EcoBoost engine that delivers up to 310 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. Your second option is a 2.3-liter I4 EcoBoost in a High Performance Package (HPP). This engine delivers up to 330 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, with a top speed of 155 mph. The third engine option is a naturally aspirated 5-liter V-8 Coyote engine, which produces up to 470 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque.
In terms of performance, every Mustang has rear-wheel drive, and you can choose between a six-speed manual transmission or a 10-speed automatic transmission. The standard Comfort driving mode provides extra electronic steering assistance to make for a smooth, easy ride, and an independent rear suspension also comes standard. In its most efficient form, the 2023 Mustang has a fuel efficiency rating of 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.
Interior Features
The interior of the 2023 Mustang feels like a high-tech control center, and yet it offers plenty of practical room and cargo space for daily use. The standard trim level features cloth front bucket seats, a push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and parking brake handle, one-touch power windows, a rearview camera, a lockable glove box compartment, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
If you're looking for even more premium interior features, there's the option of upgrading to higher trim levels. These offer such features as heated and cooled front seats, ambient lighting, a memory driver's seat, premium carpeted floor mats with accent stitching, premium door trim, a 12-inch LCD instrument cluster, a heated steering wheel, a white cue ball shift knob, and a nine-speaker sound system.
Technology and Infotainment System
Even with a vehicle as performance-focused as the Ford Mustang, its technology and infotainment system still centers it solidly in the advanced territory of 2023. The basic trim level of the 2023 Mustang includes a 4.2-inch infotainment display, while higher trim levels feature an 8-inch display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities are included as standard, and there are two smart-charging USB ports available. While the standard sound system has six speakers, a more premium option features nine speakers, or you can even opt for 12 speakers with the premium Bang and Olufsen system.
Safety and Driver Assist Features
As with any sports car, there are added risks that come along with driving at faster, more powerful speeds. The 2023 Mustang is certainly aware of this and offers plenty of safety features to give any driver peace of mind. There are plenty of airbags, including a glove box knee airbag, a driver's knee airbag, dual front airbags, front-seat side-impact airbags, and side curtain airbags. AdvanceTrac with Electronic Stability Control is included standard, and there's also an SOS post-crash alert system and Ford's Personal Safety System for the driver and front passenger.
When it comes to driving assistance, there are a variety of available features, including forward collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Overall, the 2023 Mustang received a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Pricing and Warranties
The 2023 Mustang has a fairly wide range in price among its trim options. The standard trim level, the EcoBoost trim, has a starting MSRP of $27,770, and the most premium trim level option, the Mach 1 Premium trim, has a starting MSRP of $58,665, providing a variety of price choices to accommodate a range of drivers. There are also two satisfactory warranties included with your purchase, a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
