Ford has redesigned the Ranger for 2024, introducing new drivetrain options, bolder interior and exterior features, and updated technology. All these changes have impacted the fifth-generation Ranger's towing capacity. Whether you occasionally tow light loads or regularly enjoy road trips with a kitted-out trailer, here's what you need to know about the 2024 Ford Ranger's towing capacity at every trim level.

XL

The XL is the entry-level 2024 Ford Ranger, a basic model that gets the job done on a budget. It's powered by a turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that generates 270 horsepower. An 8-inch digital driver display complements a 10.1-inch infotainment system. Even at this entry-level price point, some safety features are standard, including pre-collision assist with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection.

It might be Ford's most affordable Ranger, but it's still a capable tower with a maximum capacity of 7,500 pounds when you choose the Trailer Tow Package. That's enough for hauling a typical travel trailer or boat, another vehicle, or a few ATVs. The towing capacity remains unchanged, whether you choose the two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive configuration. If you don't want to pay for the package, you can tow light loads up to 3,500 pounds using the bumper only.

XLT

The 2024 Ford Ranger XLT provides a little more comfort and convenience. Car and Driver suggests this mid-priced vehicle is the pick of the Ford Rangers, as it looks more sophisticated with its gray-accented grille and has all the features motorists want.

The LED taillights, fog lights, wireless charging pad, and Ford Co-Pilot360 safety system are all desirable extras at this trim level. While the 2.3-liter engine comes standard, you can upgrade to a 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine, which increases the horsepower to 315. You can also upgrade to a chrome-accented grille and 18-inch wheels for an even more luxe look.

No matter which engine you choose and whether you select the two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive option, the XLT has the same towing capacity as the XL. However, 7,500 pounds should be enough pulling power for most private users. To get that maximum capacity, you'll need the Trailer Tow Package. Alternatively, you can tow loads up to 3,500 pounds with the bumper.

Lariat

The 2024 Ford Ranger Lariat is another step up, with more premium styling and equipment. It's the most luxurious Ranger in 2024, with leather-trimmed upholstery and heated power-adjustable seats up front. Your driving tunes will sound their best blaring from the premium 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system. The larger 12-inch touchscreen helps you see your contacts and navigation at a glance. The Lariat also comes with a 2.3-liter engine, but the 2.7-liter motor is optional at this trim level.

As with the XLT, the Lariat has a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds no matter which engine you choose and whether you opt for two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. That should still be enough to satisfy most motorists who invest in the Trailer Tow Package. Using the bumper rather than the package's harness and hitch receiver, you can tow no more than 3,500 pounds with the Lariat.

Raptor

Already a mainstay of Australian and European markets, the Ranger Raptor makes its American debut in 2024. This is a rugged Ranger, with a beefy 405-horsepower, 3.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 motor, top technology, and extra off-roading equipment, including an all-wheel-drive system, dedicated off-road chassis, and 33-inch all-terrain tires.

It might have the most powerful engine in the range, but the Raptor has a lower towing capacity of 5,510 pounds. While that's less than even the entry-level Ranger, the Trailer Tow Package comes standard at this trim level so you're not spending extra to tow such hefty loads. You can expect to comfortably tow a midsize travel trailer or boat with the 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor. You'll also appreciate the extra power the Raptor's engine provides when you're weighed down with a heavy load.

Pro Trailer Backup Assist

If you tow regularly, it's worth getting Pro Trailer Backup Assist to make this job easier and safer. The Ford Ranger is the only midsize pickup with this advanced towing technology available. An optional part of the Ford Co-Pilot360 safety suite, this integrated trailer brake controller and camera system helps you reverse your trailer into position.

After entering some measurements, the 360-degree camera tracks your trailer's position as you reverse. You then simply turn the knob in the direction you want the trailer to move. The clever system takes control of the steering wheel to accomplish the task without stress.

Tow/Haul Mode

The tow/haul mode is one of seven driving modes that can help you adapt your driving style to better suit your circumstances. It's especially handy when you're towing in challenging conditions, such as when you're pulling very heavy loads or towing up or down hills. In tow/haul mode, your Ranger automatically lowers the exhaust and raises the rear end to a higher, more optimal gear. You'll notice steering and braking are more precise, making towing a much safer and less stressful experience.

Tips for Towing With the 2024 Ford Ranger

Simply understanding your 2024 Ford Ranger's towing capacity is just one element of smarter towing. Keeping the following tips in mind can help you tow more safely with your new pickup:

  • Install your Trailer Tow Package equipment: It's not just common sense; it'll also protect your new vehicle's limited warranty.
  • Distribute your load carefully: Place 60% of your load at the front of your trailer and the remaining 40% at the rear, and tie it down tightly.
  • Drive conservatively: Allow more space between your vehicle and the one in front for braking, and reverse slowly with a spotter.
