The 2023 Ford Expedition fits the bill of the all-American family car with up to eight-seater capacity, attention to detail such as great technology features, and improved comfort levels. There's an Expedition out there for everyone thanks to its 10 trim options and variety of optional extras that allow you to customize your ride to meet your exact needs. Let's take a closer look.

The Available 2023 Trims

A whopping 10 trims complete the 2023 Expedition lineup, and they include:

XL STX

The base model of the 2023 Expedition range is the XL STX with a starting MSRP of $55,125. It offers a five-seater arrangement in a two-row configuration. It features SYNC 4 with a 12-inch center stack screen as the infotainment control center. It also includes the auto stop-start feature to save on gas and battery-saving technology to boot.

XLT

Just a slight upgrade from the XL STX, there's the XLT which offers an eight-seater arrangement in the three-row configuration at a starting MSRP of $59,190. This is a good option if you're looking for additional cargo space as the rear seats can convert to a 60/40 power-fold option, which allows the seats to fold flat for extra storage.

XLT MAX

At first glance, there doesn't seem to be any difference between the XLT and XLT MAX that warrants a slightly higher MSRP of $62,190. However, the MAX version provides a larger cargo area, which can be handy for both work and play. This results in a longer wheelbase and more interior cubic feet if you need the extra space.

Timberline

The Timberline offers some neat options as the first of the upper-range trims. There's zone lighting, where you can control the exterior lights with the help of an app. It's also a rough-it-out model that features higher ground clearance at 10.6 inches and an anti-lock braking system with trail control to navigate tough terrain. This trim has a starting MSRP of $71,400.

Limited

The Limited is for the safety-conscious driver that wants as many features as possible while still keeping the price under the $70,000 mark, as the MSRP is $68,060. Some of the standard features include lane centering assist and hill start assist and hill descent assist on the four-wheel-drive option. It features connected built-in navigation with a three-year subscription. It also has front parking sensors and intelligent adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane centering assist, and speed sign recognition, making it an ideal family day-to-day option.

Limited MAX

With a foot longer body, the Limited MAX features all the safety features offered by the Limited plus extra cargo space. The starting MSRP is $71,060.

King Ranch

The King Ranch is a luxe trim in the Expedition range and features a seven-seater arrangement with all-leather interiors. The two front rows feature captain's seats that are heated, ventilated, and feature 10-way power. It also has the SYNC 4A with a 15.5-inch display and a 360-degree camera with a split view of the front and rear cameras. This comes in handy whether you're parking or trying to navigate tricky terrain. The starting MSRP is $78,115.

King Ranch MAX

The King Ranch MAX, with a starting MSRP of $81,115, features a longer wheelbase for extra cabin comfort and cargo space.

Platinum

It doesn't get much more luxe than the Platinum with a starting MSRP of $80,565. Comfort is of utmost importance, which is why Ford included multi-contour seats with active motion massage to provide support, especially in the lumbar region, for those long and winding roads. There's also a continuously controlled damping system with suspension road preview designed to point out flaws in the road ahead like potholes.

Platinum MAX

Everything you need in the Platinum, plus that little bit of extra cargo space to increase an already plush and spacious interior. The starting MSRP on the Platinum MAX is $83,565.

Engines, Drivetrains, and Transmissions

Ford keeps it simple across the Expedition range with the standard 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine that offers up to 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. Its EPA-estimated fuel efficiency is 17 mpg in traffic, 23 mpg on the open road, and 19 mpg combined. The exception is the Limited, which has the option to upgrade to the 3.5-liter EcoBoost High Output Engine with up to 440 horsepower at an additional cost with the Stealth Performance Addition package. This package includes a dual exhaust system and a sport-tuned suspension.

Drivers can opt between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive on some of the models, which may also affect which of the additional features they can add to the mix as some are only available on the four-wheel-drive trims. The transmission is also standard across all trims and is a 10-speed select shift automatic transmission.

Technology

Ford Co-Pilot 360 technology is available on all the trims, however, accessibility to the range of features differs between the trims. Some of the features include Ford BlueCruise, a hands-free technology that ensures your eyes are on the road. BLIS is the blind spot information system, which includes a cross-traffic alert and trailer coverage for added safety. The Co-Pilot technology also features backup, intersection, and pre-collision assist.

Zone lighting is another exciting tech feature that allows you to adjust your outside lights, such as headlights, through the FordPass app. With FordPass Connect, you can turn the interior of your car into a Wi-Fi hotspot. It connects up to 10 devices through a 4G network. There is also a dual-headrest rear seat entertainment system available with Amazon Fire TV built-in and includes 16 GB storage. You would need an Amazon profile and access to a Wi-Fi connection for streaming. The entertainment system includes two voice remotes with Alexa.
