Since 2003, the Ford Expedition has been building up a host of improvements that set it apart from the rest of the large SUV market. With only minor continuous updates throughout the years, the newest update is accumulative, huge, and stunning. In general, the large SUV class doesn't see many updates on a regular basis, which renders these new bells and whistles totally charming. After 15 years, the all-new Expedition does not disappoint.

The 2018 Ford Expedition is big. It's impressive and full of all the room you want. To keep it big, Ford took a page out of the F-150 book, and created an aluminum-intensive body style for the Expedition like the 2018 Ford F-150 did to shave off a few pounds. With a weight dropped by around 300 pounds, it certainly fixes the weight problem and keeps the SUV in the large class without making it cumbersome and clumsy. This year, you can choose from two different versions of the vehicle: the 210-inch long XLT 4x4 model or the Max version that adds another foot of length.

The Goodies

Ford prides itself on providing highly customizable products that you can make into something that is totally your own. That means there's plenty of goodies to add to your model to capitalize on the vehicle's own natural, sleek beauty. Just a few of the customizable pieces includes the FX4 Off-Road package as well as the Sync 3 infotainment system that provides a whole slew of impressive technical advancements to improve your driving experience like blind-spot monitoring, cross traffic alerts, hands-free keyless access, trailer tow-monitoring, heated seating and steering, as well as an impressive navigation system and increased cargo spaces. Like so many SUVs, the Expedition is made for optimal convenience and handling so it's just as much about driving as it is about spending time with your family.

The Family Man's Truck

The Expedition takes more than a few cues from our landmark F-150. Arguably, the only thing the F150 lacks is room for the whole family, but the 2018 Expedition amends that issue easily.  If you step inside, you'll notice the two vehicles share the same chic control panel designs that fit well with the angular, yet large shape. You'll notice that the similarly sized HVAC vents a large, powerful steering wheel. Space is the ultimate convenience in this large SUV and it features a large double tiered glove box with as much space as you could dream up. The newest novelty that calls to mind the push button keyless start is the rotary shift knob rather than the traditional console gear selector or even the column shifter.

The Seating

As we discussed previously, the only problem with a truck is that it can't fit your entire family. Since the Expedition can, it decided to do it in style with second and third-row seating that's comparably comfortable to your favorite armchair. Essentially, the Expedition is the perfect road trip car since everyone will be traveling first class. The second-row seating includes plenty of leg, knee and arm room to keep the passengers comfortable, and when they're ready to be lulled to sleep, they can kick back in actually reclining seats. As far as the third-row seating, there's no need to jostle like most third-row seating requires. Climbing in and out of the back-most, secluded seating won't give you a headache as the second is easily convertible and is easy to fit inside. Your knees will be at an actual 90 degrees and when you're accompanied by third-row, individual climate controls, reclining seats, and USBs for every seat, you'll be truly comfortable. If you're wanting to put those seats down to transport an object instead of your people, you can access an accommodating 104.6 cubic feet to transport whatever you'd like to your heart's desire.

The Ride and Control

If you're worried that such a large vehicle will be cumbersome and clunky driving down the road, think again. The highway ride is purposely designed to be smooth and precise, so the ride purposely imitates a leather coated cruiser rather than a large, multi-purpose vehicle. The steering provides a precise turn radius with easy twists and great balance to provide the ultimate in driving control, which is important with a large vehicle. Pair the control and ride with the 3.5 liters Ecoboost V6 with twin turbo, and you'll have plenty of power to get up hills and around corners quickly without feeling slowed down by the size. The V6 easily manages to provide plenty of torque throughout the entire rev meter. The transmission knows the vehicle and it's capabilities well, meaning it'll kick into higher gear as soon as it senses a hill, but it'll click down quickly to make for controlled slowing and stopping.

Leaving the Beaten Path

While the Expedition takes a touch more time to come to a full stop, it's also totally equipped to handle off-roading, where most large SUVs sputter at the idea, the Expedition responds like a truck. Though the ride is, understandably, bumpier, the Expedition still tackles dirty, slippery obstacles like their pavement instead of shifting dirt.

A Companion and a Vehicle

When you purchase a vehicle off of the lot, you're investing in a companion that will take you where you want to go for the next ten years or more. If you're looking for something that's equipped and smooth, that can easily grow with your family, the Expedition will fit like a glove. Superior performance, control, and space will allow you to adapt to any situation, whether it's picking up all of your son's friends for a birthday party, or trucking home all of the lumber for your next big home improvement project. With the 2018 Ford Expedition, the limitations are only your imagination, as you new companion will strive to satisfy every one of your transportation whims.
